The Quintessential Summer Sip: Peach Basil Gin Fizz
For those who cherish the golden days of summer, this Peach Basil Gin Fizz is more than just a recipe; it’s a celebration. Since its conception, this cocktail has been a staple in my summer repertoire, and for good reason. It perfectly captures the fleeting sweetness of peak-season peaches, infusing it with an unexpected herbaceous depth from fresh basil. The result is an incredibly refreshing, sophisticated, yet undeniably fun drink that quickly becomes a favorite.
My adoration for peaches runs deep, especially when the summer harvest brings forth their juicy bounty. This isn’t just a passing fancy; it’s a full-blown obsession that often dictates my culinary adventures. From delightful desserts to spirited libations, peaches have been the star. This journey began with the Fresh Peach Crush cocktail, followed by the indulgent No-Churn Peach Cobbler Ice Cream. And now, this Gin Fizz proudly joins the peach-infused lineup, offering another exquisite way to savor the season’s finest fruit.

Why This Peach Basil Gin Fizz Stands Out
What makes this particular gin fizz so exceptional? It’s the harmonious marriage of flavors and textures, creating a multi-layered sensory experience. The sweetness of ripe peaches, brightened by a hint of citrus-forward gin, and grounded by the peppery, aromatic notes of basil, makes for an unforgettable taste profile. This isn’t your average sugary cocktail; it’s a thoughtfully balanced drink that highlights fresh, seasonal ingredients. It’s the kind of cocktail that makes you pause, appreciate the moment, and fully embrace the joys of summer. Whether you’re hosting a backyard barbecue, enjoying a quiet evening on the porch, or simply unwinding after a long day, this drink promises pure, unadulterated bliss.
The Charm of Rustic Presentation
While this cocktail is sophisticated enough for any fancy glass, there’s a certain undeniable charm in serving it in a rustic mason jar. My collection of mason jars, seemingly endless and ever-growing, makes them my go-to for summer beverages. They bring a relaxed, laid-back vibe to any gathering, perfect for casual summer entertaining. Plus, a broken jar is no tragedy when you have plenty more stashed away! There’s something wonderfully comforting and nostalgic about enjoying a handcrafted drink from a simple jar – it just feels right for summer.

Ingredients Spotlight: Crafting Your Perfect Fizz
Every great cocktail starts with exceptional ingredients. For this Peach Basil Gin Fizz, each component plays a crucial role in building its vibrant flavor profile.
Choosing Your Gin: The Foundation of Flavor
The gin you select can significantly influence the final taste of your cocktail. For a refreshing summer drink like this fizz, I recommend opting for a gin that is bright and citrus-forward, rather than overly dry or heavily juniper-dominant. Look for gins with notes of lemon, orange peel, or even a subtle floral quality. These characteristics will complement the sweetness of the peach and the fresh aroma of basil beautifully. However, don’t hesitate to use your favorite gin; ultimately, the best gin is the one you enjoy most. Experimentation is always encouraged in the world of mixology!
The Magic of Fresh Peaches and Peach Liqueur
The heart of this cocktail lies in the peaches. Always choose ripe, juicy summer peaches for the best flavor and sweetness. Peeling them ensures a smoother texture in your drink. Complementing the fresh fruit is peach liqueur, which intensifies the peach flavor without adding excessive sweetness. After extensive testing, I’ve found Mathilde peach liqueur to be truly exceptional. It captures the authentic taste of fresh peaches without any artificial undertones. If Mathilde isn’t available, a good quality peach brandy or schnapps can work in a pinch, though they might alter the nuanced flavor profile slightly.
Basil Simple Syrup: An Aromatic Masterpiece
The basil simple syrup is a game-changer, infusing the cocktail with a fresh, herbaceous sweetness that elevates it beyond the ordinary. Making it from scratch is incredibly simple and yields superior results compared to store-bought syrups. The process involves gently simmering fresh basil with sugar and water, allowing the basil’s essential oils to permeate the syrup. This not only sweetens the drink but also adds a layer of complex aromatic depth. Beyond this gin fizz, basil simple syrup is fantastic in iced tea, lemonade, or even other spirit-based cocktails.

Mastering the Craft: How to Assemble Your Peach Basil Gin Fizz
Creating this cocktail is a delightful process that’s surprisingly easy. The key is in the muddling, which extracts the full flavor from the fresh ingredients.
The Art of Muddling
Start by adding your chosen gin to the bottom of a sturdy glass – a heavy-bottomed glass or a mason jar works perfectly. To this, add your peeled peach slices, a splash of peach liqueur, a touch of basil simple syrup, and a few fresh basil leaves. Now comes the muddling! Using a muddler, gently but firmly press and twist the ingredients. The goal is to release the juices from the peaches and the aromatic oils from the basil without completely pulverizing them or bruising the basil into bitterness. This crucial step ensures a robust and well-integrated flavor base.
Building the Fizz
Once your ingredients are muddled and their flavors melded, fill your glass with ice. Next, pour in the vibrant peach nectar, which adds another layer of peachy goodness and a beautiful color. Finally, top it off with chilled club soda. The amount of club soda you add is entirely up to your personal preference; add more for a lighter, less sweet drink, or less for a richer flavor. Give it a gentle stir to combine all the elements, then garnish with an extra basil sprig and a fresh peach slice for an elegant finish. The effervescence of the club soda creates that satisfying “fizz” that defines this classic cocktail style.

Cheers to endless summer days and exquisite sips!

Ingredients
Basil Simple Syrup
- 1 cup packed fresh basil
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup water
Gin Fizz
- 2 ounces gin, your favorite
- ½ ounce peach liqueur, I prefer Mathilde
- ¼ ounce basil simple syrup
- 3-5 leaves fresh basil
- 2 peach slices, peeled
- 1 ounce peach nectar
- 3-4 ounces club soda, preferably chilled
Instructions
-
To make the basil simple syrup, add sugar and water to a saucepan. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil. Add the fresh basil, and, using a wooden spoon, break apart the basil to release its oils into the sugar mixture. Continue to cook for 2 minutes. Remove from the heat and allow the mixture to rest for 30 minutes. Strain and transfer to an airtight container. The syrup will stay fresh for up to 1 month in the refrigerator.
-
To make the gin fizz, add gin, peach liqueur, peach slices, basil, and basil simple syrup to a glass. Muddle to combine. Add ice to the glass and top with peach nectar and club soda. Stir to combine. Garnish with basil and a peach slice.
Notes
- Preparation time reflects hands-on making of the cocktail and not the time it takes to make the simple syrup.
- I have tested several varieties and brands of peach liqueur, and Mathilde is my absolute favorite. It tastes the closest to fresh, ripe peaches without the artificial notes in the background. If you’re unable to locate Mathilde, peach brandy or peach schnapps will do in a pinch, but they’re not my favorite options.
- The amount of club soda you add will depend on how sweet you like your cocktail. Chilled club soda works best in this recipe.
