Saturday’s Slice of Life: Endless Eats

Unforgettable Culinary Delights and Historic Charm: My Ultimate Foodie Getaway to Williamsburg

Happy Saturday, dear readers! I’m thrilled to be back and share the delightful details of my recent vacation. As the title might suggest, this trip was an unapologetic celebration of food, a true culinary adventure from start to finish. For a self-proclaimed foodie like me, a vacation without exceptional dining experiences feels incomplete. It’s not just about sustenance; it’s about exploration, indulgence, and creating vivid memories around incredible flavors. Every meal became a highlight, shaping the narrative of our getaway and leaving a lasting impression on my palate and soul.

Relaxation, Recreation, and Remarkable Refreshments

My partner, Squirrel, and I truly embraced the art of relaxation during our stay. The resort provided the perfect backdrop for unwinding and enjoying each other’s company. While Squirrel found his peace fishing by the tranquil lake, I enjoyed invigorating bike rides through scenic trails and immersed myself in a good book by the poolside. Our evenings often involved lively conversations and, dare I say, a touch of spirited revelry. What started as “indulging in some spirits” quickly escalated into an exciting exploration of the local cocktail scene!

Among the many delightful concoctions, the sophisticated Champagne Cobbler from Second Street Bistro stood out with its elegant effervescence and balanced flavors. Plaza Azteca’s Jumbo Margarita, a vibrant and potent creation, also earned a top spot. Squirrel, ever the creature of habit, stuck to his classic Jack and Coke, proving that sometimes the familiar is just as comforting. Our evenings were filled with laughter, good company, and expertly crafted beverages that perfectly complemented the laid-back vacation vibe.

Evening Entertainment and Unbeatable Bites at the Resort Pub

The convenience of having a charming pub right on the resort premises was a definite bonus. On the evening of our arrival, we wasted no time in settling in there. We stumbled upon their “Name That Tune” party, and my competitive spirit immediately kicked in! The concept was simple yet engaging: the bartender played snippets of songs, and guests had to identify the title and artist. Squirrel and I, perhaps overestimating our musical knowledge, gave it our best shot. While we didn’t exactly dominate the competition (coming in second to last, in fact!), we had an absolute blast, laughing off our musical missteps.

Beyond the lively entertainment, the pub truly shone with its food offerings, especially their hot wings. These weren’t just any wings; they were, without exaggeration, the best hot wings I’ve ever tasted. Each piece was cooked to crispy perfection, a delightful crunch followed by a generous coating of incredibly flavorful, saucy goodness. The balance of spice and tang was simply sublime. It was an unexpected culinary highlight that I found myself craving long after we left. That pub, with its infectious energy and phenomenal wings, will certainly be missed.

Stepping Back in Time: A Journey Through Colonial Williamsburg

Our vacation also included a captivating spin through Colonial Williamsburg, an absolute must-see for anyone with an appreciation for history. Stepping into this living history museum felt like a journey back in time. The meticulously preserved old buildings, the quaint dirt roads, and the vibrant festive colonial attire worn by interpreters instantly transported us to another era. We watched horse-drawn carriages gracefully transport guests through the cobblestone streets, admired ladies in their elaborate hats adorned with billowing ribbons, and observed gents in their distinctive tights and buckled shoes.

It was an incredibly immersive and educational experience, offering a vivid glimpse into 18th-century American life. Every corner held a new discovery, from artisans practicing traditional crafts to historical re-enactments bringing stories to life. During our exploration, we made a charming acquaintance – a majestic horse that I affectionately named Mr. Ed. His calm demeanor and striking presence made him quite handsome, and encountering him added a touch of whimsical charm to our historical adventure.

A Gastronomic Masterpiece at Second Street Bistro

Monday evening brought us to Second Street Bistro for what promised to be a truly fancified dinner. I had thoroughly researched the restaurant beforehand, and the glowing reviews painted a picture of culinary excellence. I’m pleased to report that the reviews were absolutely accurate; it was, without a doubt, a truly memorable and tasty dinner experience. The ambiance was refined yet inviting, creating the perfect setting for a special evening.

To start, Squirrel and I shared the sweet tea pork belly appetizer, and oh my goodness, it was an absolute revelation! Each bite was a harmonious blend of smoky richness, a subtle sweetness imparted by the sweet tea brine, and an irresistible crispiness around the edges. My mouth truly “died and went to heaven” with this dish – an unforgettable taste sensation. For his main course, Squirrel, a man of discerning taste, ordered the cornbread and goat cheese stuffed quail, served alongside a creamy sweet potato risotto. He raved about it incessantly, describing its goodness at least a million times. Watching him “oooh” and “ahhh” as he savored each bite of the petite bird was amusing. Given his large stature, seeing him delicately hold the tiny quail drumsticks between his thumb and index finger was quite a sight, reminiscent of an adult at a child’s tea party, gingerly sipping from an itty-bitty pretend teacup. We all couldn’t help but stare, amused by his enthusiastic enjoyment. Poor Squirrel, a true testament to how delicious the dish must have been!

My choice for the main course was the shrimp and andouille sausage, artfully presented over smoked gouda grit cakes. This dish was a symphony of flavors: smoky, spicy, and subtly sweet, all working in perfect harmony. Each element was flawlessly executed, from the perfectly cooked shrimp to the robust flavor of the andouille sausage, all brought together by the rich, cheesy grit cakes. It was devoured with gusto!

Of course, no fine dining experience is complete without dessert. The vanilla ginger creme brulee on the menu instantly caught my eye, and I simply couldn’t resist its allure. The flavor profile was nothing short of amazing. Sometimes ginger can be overpowering, but in this creation, it was perfectly balanced by the smooth, comforting notes of vanilla, resulting in a harmonious and incredibly satisfying finish to an exceptional meal.

Authentic Flavors at Plaza Azteca: A Mexican Food Paradise

On Tuesday, I had the pleasure of chatting with the chef and manager at the resort’s pub. I always believe in asking locals for their dining recommendations; it’s a surefire way to discover hidden gems and guarantee a fantastic meal. They enthusiastically pointed us towards a local Mexican restaurant. As a huge admirer of Mexican cuisine, I could honestly eat it every single day if given the chance! Tuesday night marked our final dinner in Williamsburg, and we headed straight to Plaza Azteca, eager to experience their recommended fare.

Plaza Azteca delivered an outstanding Mexican dining experience – arguably the best I’ve had since our trip to Texas a few years ago. From the moment we walked in, the vibrant atmosphere and enticing aromas promised something special. We started with fresh, made-to-order guacamole, which we requested extra spicy, and it did not disappoint. The creamy avocado, zesty lime, and kick of heat were an absolute delight. For my main course, I chose the spinach and chicken enchiladas, generously topped with a rich, roasted poblano sauce. Each bite was a comforting blend of savory fillings and a deeply flavorful sauce that left me wanting more. Squirrel, ever the adventurous eater when it comes to portion sizes, ordered what could only be described as the biggest burrito on the face of the earth – a truly monumental and satisfying dish.

To complement my meal, I indulged in a jumbo-sized Patron margarita. Plaza Azteca is renowned for its “Margirona,” a frozen margarita ingeniously served with an upside-down bottle of Corona nestled within the boozy concoction. While intriguing, I’m not a fan of beer, so I stuck with the classic, perfectly crafted Patron margarita. The entire experience at Plaza Azteca was so exceptional that it had me seriously considering a permanent move to Williamsburg! The flavors, the portions, the atmosphere – it was truly a Mexican food paradise that exceeded all expectations.

Balancing Indulgence with Invigorating Exercise

Despite the delicious excesses, I remained dedicated to my upcoming 5k race and managed to fit in some training during our vacation. Call it dedication, or perhaps a clever way to make room for more food! Running on the resort grounds was an absolute pleasure. The scenic paths wound past elegant geese (initially mistook them for swans!), vibrant flowers, serene lakes, and graceful fountains spouting crisp lake water. The sheer beauty of the surroundings made exercising feel less like a chore and more like a delightful sensory experience. When you have such lovely scenery to admire, a workout becomes an opportunity to connect with nature and appreciate the stunning landscapes.

Embracing Vacation Style: A Little Indulgence in Fashion

Remember my recent shopping spree? Well, it wasn’t just for frivolous spending; it was for a good cause – ensuring I felt fabulous every day we were in Williamsburg! There’s something truly empowering about dressing up and feeling chic on vacation. It really makes a gal feel good, boosting confidence and adding an extra layer of enjoyment to the trip. Take these shoes, for instance – the perfect blend of style and comfort for exploring new places!

Reflections and Anticipation: Until the Next Adventure

As you can probably gather, our Williamsburg getaway was nothing short of wonderful. From the historical charm to the incredible culinary scene and the much-needed relaxation, every moment was cherished. Now, the dream of winning the lottery so I can vacation every single day seems more appealing than ever! Alas, reality calls, and I suppose I’ll just have to patiently wait until June for our exciting beach vacation. The memories from this trip will certainly tide me over until then.
