Embracing the Holiday Spirit: From Crafting to Culinary Delights

The holidays, for me, always ignite a spark of creativity, extending far beyond the kitchen. Recently, I’ve found myself diving headfirst into the wonderful world of crafting. Yes, it’s true – I’ve become quite the crafter! What started as a whimsical experiment quickly evolved into a full-blown passion. There’s something undeniably therapeutic about transforming raw materials into something beautiful, much like the magic of baking transforms simple ingredients into delectable treats.

My journey into crafting began subtly, perhaps with the allure of a hot glue gun. Believe it or not, the delicate, almost ethereal strands of glue that float through the air as you work hold a strange fascination for me. It’s a small detail, but it speaks to the meticulous joy of creation. This newfound hobby has truly blossomed, proving it’s far from “just a phase.” It’s an extension of the same creative energy that I bring into my baking, making the holiday season feel even more vibrant and personal.

Just the other day, my crafting table was adorned with burlap, ribbons, and felt, culminating in a charming Rudolf wreath. Complete with a bright red nose, majestic antlers, and even a stylish red and black flannel bow, this dude is truly handsome! Hanging proudly on my front door, it brings a cheerful warmth to our home, setting a welcoming tone for all who visit. It’s moments like these, where creativity meets coziness, that truly define the holiday experience for me.

I often wonder if I’m alone in this joyful pursuit. Do any of you also find solace and excitement in crafting, or am I the sole “dork” happily surrounded by glitter and glue? It’s a wonderful way to unwind and infuse your home with personalized festive cheer.

The Rudolf wreath project was just the beginning. It spontaneously led to the creation of a festive Christmas banner, which then inspired an elegant advent wreath made of live greens, beautifully accented by two shimmering glitter globes. My crafting endeavors are, dare I say, getting downright serious! There’s a profound satisfaction in seeing these handmade decorations come to life, each piece adding a unique touch to our holiday celebration.

However, I’m not one to craft in solitude. That would frankly be a little silly. The true joy, I’ve found, lies in gathering with a group of equally enthusiastic and crafty ladies – who also happen to be my dearest gal pals. Our crafting sessions are not just about making things; they are cherished social events. Absolutely no crafting can commence without a spread of delicious snacks and, of course, a selection of delightful cocktails. It simply wouldn’t feel right without our little ritual of shared laughter, good conversation, and festive treats.

Chocolate Dipped Hazelnut Sandies: A Holiday Tradition with a Twist

And speaking of snacks, with the holiday season in full swing, our crafting gatherings have been a delightful excuse to indulge in all the cookies! Seriously, all the cookies! Among our favorites, these Chocolate Dipped Hazelnut Sandies hold a special place. They are wonderfully reminiscent of my beloved Grandmom’s Pecan Sandies, a recipe that has been a cherished part of our family traditions for years. This particular version, however, introduces a sophisticated twist that elevates them into truly irresistible holiday showstoppers.

Instead of the traditional pecans, I’ve opted for the exquisite flavor and crunch of toasted Diamond Chopped Hazelnuts. The act of toasting the hazelnuts before incorporating them into the dough is a crucial step; it intensifies their nutty aroma and deepens their flavor, adding an incredible depth to each bite. Furthermore, rather than rolling the baked cookies in powdered sugar, I chose to dip them in rich, velvety bittersweet chocolate. This simple alteration transforms the classic sandy into a truly decadent experience, with the slightly bitter chocolate perfectly balancing the sweetness of the cookie and the earthy notes of the hazelnuts.

The Perfect Blend of Flavors and Textures

These cookies are an absolute dream. Each bite offers a harmonious symphony of textures and tastes. They are incredibly buttery, dissolving delicately on your tongue, revealing a subtle sweetness that never overwhelms. The star of the show, of course, is the exceptionally toasty hazelnut flavor, providing a delightful crunch and warmth. Finally, the smooth, dark chocolate coating adds a layer of sophisticated bitterness and a luxurious mouthfeel, making these cookies utterly addictive. They are designed to be loved, cherished, and devoured – you are truly going to adore them!

Beyond their incredible taste, these cookies are surprisingly easy to make, making them a fantastic addition to your holiday baking repertoire. Whether you’re looking for a homemade gift, a delicious treat for your next party, or just something special to enjoy with your morning coffee, these hazelnut sandies fit the bill perfectly. Their festive appearance and irresistible flavor profile make them a guaranteed crowd-pleaser and a highlight of any holiday dessert spread.

Baking these cookies also fills the house with the most wonderful aroma – a blend of toasted nuts, warm butter, and melting chocolate that is the very essence of holiday cheer. It’s a scent that invites warmth, comfort, and a sense of joyful anticipation, making the entire experience from start to finish truly delightful. So gather your ingredients, turn on some festive music, and prepare to create some magical holiday memories with these incredible Chocolate Dipped Hazelnut Sandies.

Chocolate Dipped Hazelnut Sandies Recipe

Yield: 25-30 cookies

Total Time: 35 minutes

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 25 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons water
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup chopped toasted Diamond Hazelnuts
  • 1 cup bittersweet chocolate, high quality recommended
  • 1/2 teaspoon shortening (or coconut oil, for smoother chocolate)

Directions:

  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add the water and vanilla extract, mixing until just combined. Use a rubber spatula to scrape down the sides of the bowl, ensuring all ingredients are fully incorporated.
  2. With the mixer on low speed, gradually add the all-purpose flour, mixing until the dough just comes together. Be careful not to overmix. Gently fold in the chopped toasted hazelnuts. Once combined, cover the dough and chill it in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours. This chilling step is crucial for preventing the cookies from spreading too much and for developing their buttery flavor.
  3. Preheat your oven to 325 degrees F (160 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
  4. Remove the chilled dough from the refrigerator. Shape the dough into uniform 1-inch balls. Place them on the prepared baking sheet, leaving about an inch between each cookie.
  5. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the edges of the cookies are a light golden color. The centers may still appear soft, but they will firm up as they cool. Once baked, transfer the cookies to a wire rack to cool completely. It’s important they are fully cooled before dipping in chocolate.
  6. While the cookies are cooling, prepare your chocolate dip. Add the bittersweet chocolate (chopped into small pieces for even melting) and shortening (or coconut oil) to a heatproof bowl. Set the bowl over a pot of simmering water, ensuring the bottom of the bowl does not touch the water. Stir occasionally until the chocolate is completely smooth and no lumps remain. This method, known as a double boiler, helps to prevent the chocolate from burning.
  7. Once the cookies are completely cool, dip the top half of each cookie into the melted chocolate. You can use a fork or a dipping tool for this. Allow any excess chocolate to drip off. Place the dipped cookies back on the wire rack (or onto parchment paper) to allow the chocolate to set. For a quicker set, you can carefully place them in the refrigerator for a few minutes.
  8. Once the chocolate has fully set, transfer the cookies to an airtight container. These delightful Chocolate Dipped Hazelnut Sandies will stay fresh and delicious for up to 5 days at room temperature.
