Celebrate Summer’s Start: The Ultimate Strawberry-Basil Lemonade for Your Memorial Day Festivities
Memorial Day weekend isn’t just a holiday; it’s a cherished annual tradition that signals the official beginning of summer, a season of sunshine, warmth, and outdoor gatherings. For many, it’s a chance to step away from the daily grind and embrace the simple pleasures of life. This extended weekend offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy a well-deserved break, connect with loved ones, and savor delicious food and drinks. From the moment the calendar flips to Memorial Day, thoughts turn to sun-kissed days, the casual comfort of flip-flops, and the delightful aroma of grilled feasts and picnic spreads. It’s a true celebration of all things summer.
The #SundaySupper community often gathers to share inspiring ideas for such occasions, and this week, our focus is squarely on crafting the perfect picnic experience. When I envision an ideal picnic, a whimsical scene comes to mind: cycling leisurely to a picturesque park, a basket brimming with delectable treats swaying gently from my handlebars. I picture unfolding a soft blanket on lush, emerald grass, the gentle pop of a cork releasing the fizz from a chilled bottle of bubbly. There I’d recline, propped on my elbows, a light breeze rustling through the trees, lost in conversation about future dreams. It’s a vision of pure, unadulterated relaxation and romance – a fantasy I’m eager to transform into reality.
The Picnic Dream vs. Reality: Finding Bliss Outdoors
While the notion of a serene picnic is enchanting, the reality can sometimes be a little less glamorous. I must confess, I’ve yet to experience that idyllic, breezy picnic straight out of a daydream. My attempts have often been fraught with unforeseen challenges, such as a memorable beach picnic where sand became an unwelcome guest in every dish, turning each bite into a gritty surprise. Crunching on sand while trying to enjoy a perfectly made sandwich is decidedly not my idea of a delicious outdoor meal. These experiences, however, only fuel the desire to curate the perfect outdoor dining experience, one where every detail contributes to joy, not discomfort.
Whether your Memorial Day plans involve a cozy gathering on a classic patchwork blanket or a lively backyard barbecue with friends and family, every successful outdoor meal needs a signature drink to truly elevate the occasion. This year, I have discovered the quintessential beverage that promises to be the star of your spread: a vibrant Strawberry-Basil Lemonade. What makes this drink truly exceptional is its incredible versatility – it can be enjoyed as a refreshing, family-friendly mocktail or easily transformed into a spirited cocktail, hence its “spiked or unspiked” appeal. For gatherings that include children, the alcohol-free version is a delightful choice. But if you’re hosting an adults-only party, don’t hesitate to add a splash of your favorite spirit to create a truly celebratory atmosphere. The beauty of this recipe is that you can even prepare two distinct batches, ensuring everyone has a beverage tailored to their preference.
Embrace the Good Times: Spiked Strawberry-Basil Lemonade
Personally, I often gravitate towards the spiked version of this magnificent strawberry-basil lemonade. Life, after all, is meant to be lived with a bit of zest and excitement! For me, a “spiked” drink instantly translates to “good times,” and I’m always in pursuit of those moments. While the unspiked option is undeniably delicious and refreshing, adding a touch of alcohol just elevates the experience, transforming it into a truly festive summer cocktail. It’s a delightful way to unwind and add an extra layer of enjoyment to any social occasion.
The Perfect Summer Elixir: Tart, Sweet, and Utterly Refreshing
This exquisite beverage is truly an oasis on a sweltering summer’s day. Its profile is a masterful balance of refreshing, tart, and sweet notes that dance on your palate. The vibrant sweetness of ripe strawberries harmonizes beautifully with the bright, zesty tang of fresh lemons, while subtle undertones of aromatic basil add an unexpected and sophisticated twist. Each sip is a burst of invigorating flavor, making it the ultimate thirst-quencher for any warm-weather gathering, from casual backyard barbecues to elegant garden parties. It’s more than just a drink; it’s a summer experience in a glass.
One of the delightful characteristics of this recipe is the option to embrace or remove the strawberry pulp. For my personal preference, I chose to retain the pulp, as it adds a wonderful texture and intensifies the natural strawberry flavor. This choice yields a slightly thicker, velvety smooth drink that truly bursts with the essence of juicy strawberries. However, if you prefer a perfectly clear and smooth lemonade, simply strain the simple syrup mixture through a fine-mesh sieve after blending. This simple step ensures a beautifully refined beverage, while still retaining all the incredible flavors of the tart lemons and sweet, fragrant basil. The beauty lies in its adaptability to suit your taste.
Crafting Your Perfect Summer Cocktail or Mocktail
Transforming this delicious lemonade into a spirited summer cocktail is effortlessly simple. A few splashes of your preferred alcohol – whether it’s crisp vodka, smooth rum, or effervescent prosecco – are all it takes to create an intoxicatingly refreshing drink. Each spirit offers a unique twist: vodka provides a clean, potent base, rum adds a touch of tropical sweetness, and prosecco infuses a celebratory fizz, making it perfect for toasts and special occasions. This adaptability makes it an ideal choice for any adult gathering, providing a sophisticated yet fun beverage option.
For those who prefer their lemonade alcohol-free, or for events catering to all ages, simply substitute the alcoholic additions with an extra two cups of water. This ensures the lemonade retains its perfect balance of flavor and refreshing qualities, offering a delightful mocktail that everyone can enjoy. Garnish with a fresh strawberry slice, a lemon wheel, or a sprig of basil for an extra touch of elegance and visual appeal. Preparing it in a large pitcher or dispenser makes it an easy self-serve option for any party, allowing guests to refresh themselves freely throughout the celebration.
However you choose to celebrate, may your Memorial Day be filled with joy, relaxation, and delicious sips of this homemade Strawberry-Basil Lemonade. It’s the perfect companion to usher in the glorious days of summer.

Strawberry-Basil Lemonade: Spiked or Unspiked
Recipe Type: Beverage, Cocktail
Author: Jennie
Prep time:
Cook time:
Total time:
Ingredients
- 2 cups fresh-squeezed lemon juice
- 4 1/2 cups water, divided
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 1 lb strawberries, hulled and quartered
- 1 cup fresh basil leaves + 4-5 additional leaves for blending, divided
- 2 cups vodka, light rum, or prosecco (optional; if leaving unspiked, add 2 more cups of water instead)
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, 1 1/2 cups of water, quartered strawberries, and 1 cup of basil leaves. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has fully dissolved and the strawberries have softened slightly, about 10 minutes. Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the mixture to cool and steep for at least 30 minutes to infuse the flavors.
- Carefully transfer the cooled strawberry-basil mixture to a blender. Pulse until smooth. Add the remaining 4-5 fresh basil leaves and pulse briefly to break them up and release their aroma. For a perfectly smooth lemonade without any pulp, pass the blended mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or strainer into a clean bowl, pressing down on the solids to extract all the liquid.
- Pour the lemon juice, the remaining water (or additional water if making it unspiked), and the strawberry-basil sugar mixture into a large pitcher. Stir thoroughly to combine all ingredients. If using alcohol, add the vodka, rum, or prosecco now and stir again. Serve generously over ice and garnish with fresh strawberry slices, lemon wedges, or a sprig of basil for an extra touch of freshness.
