The Birth of a Legend: Discovering the Margarona
What’s a Cinco de Mayo celebration without a fantastic cocktail to toast with? As a self-proclaimed lover of creative beverages, I’m always on the hunt for innovative drink ideas. This quest led me to combine two of my all-time favorite spirited sips: the crisp, refreshing taste of Corona beer and the tangy delight of a classic margarita. The result? A brilliant fusion I affectionately call the “Margarona.” While I can’t claim originality for the concept itself – the genius idea originated elsewhere – I can certainly take credit for perfecting the recipe that I’m about to share with you.
My first encounter with this spectacular beverage was during a memorable vacation in Williamsburg, Virginia, back in April. My travel companion, Squirrel, and I were exploring the historic charm of the city when we stumbled upon a local gem: Plaza Azteca. Following the enthusiastic recommendations of several locals, we decided to spend our last vacation evening there. Looking back, I wish we had discovered it sooner, as we would have happily dined there every single night! The food was exceptional, and the atmosphere was buzzing with an undeniable energy.
A Local Sensation: The Beergarita Phenomenon
At Plaza Azteca, the “beergaritas” or “margaronas,” as the locals affectionately dubbed them, were an absolute sensation. Everyone we spoke to, from our friendly server to fellow diners, insisted that we had to try them. And it wasn’t just talk; upon entering the restaurant, it was immediately clear that these dazzling drinks were the star of the show. Glistening like sparkling green stars, margaronas adorned nearly every table as far as the eye could see. The visual spectacle alone was enough to pique anyone’s curiosity. What’s a girl to do when surrounded by such a vibrant and irresistible phenomenon?
Naturally, I ordered one! And oh, were they magnificent. The moment that first sip of tangy, effervescent goodness touched my tongue, I knew with absolute certainty that I had to recreate this marvel at home. The blend of crisp beer and zesty margarita was an unforgettable flavor experience that left a lasting impression. It became my mission to bring the magic of the Margarona from that vibrant Williamsburg restaurant right into my own kitchen.
Your Go-To Cinco de Mayo Cocktail: The Margarona
So, the second I learned that this week’s #SundaySupper theme was Cinco de Mayo, there was no doubt in my mind what I would share with all of you. It had to be the Margarona. This unique cocktail, blending the best of both worlds, is not just a drink; it’s an experience. Perfect for festive gatherings, backyard BBQs, or simply a relaxing evening, the Margarona is guaranteed to impress. It’s a versatile and incredibly fun way to enjoy your favorite Mexican flavors, making it an ideal choice for celebrating Cinco de Mayo in style.
Crafting Your Perfect Margarona: Essential Tips for Success
To ensure your homemade Margarona is as potent and flavorful as the one I enjoyed in Virginia, a few crucial steps are key. First and foremost, you absolutely must ensure your margarita mixture is thoroughly chilled before it meets the ice. This isn’t just a suggestion; it’s a vital part of the process. If you skip this chilling period, you risk diluting your exquisite cocktail once the ice is added, resulting in a watery, less vibrant flavor profile. Nobody wants a bland Margarona! For the full, robust taste and potent kick you desire, make sure that margarita base is ice-cold before blending. Patience truly pays off in this scenario.
The Art of the Pour: Mastering the Corona Insertion
Now, here’s a crucial tip I learned the hard way: resist the urge to fill your glass to the brim with the frozen margarita mixture before adding the Corona bottle. My first attempt resulted in an enthusiastic overflow, leading to a frantic chugging session to save my delicious concoction from spilling everywhere! Learn from my experience and avoid this messy mishap.
Instead, fill your glass about halfway with the luscious frozen margarita mixture. Then, carefully invert your mini Corona bottle and gently ease it into the glass, allowing the bottle’s neck to touch the bottom. As if by magic, the Corona will begin its slow, mesmerizing flow into the glass, gracefully mingling with the icy margarita. Don’t fret; it will eventually stop its initial gush. What’s truly fascinating about this technique is the ingenious suction effect created by the bottle. The Corona will only continue to empty into your drink as you sip it (preferably through a straw, which enhances the mixing process). This allows for a gradual, perfectly integrated blend of beer and margarita with every delightful gulp.
What you get is nothing short of a perfectly balanced, tangy lime and crisp beer fusion. The gentle bubbles from the Corona playfully tickle your tongue, while the zesty lime causes your lips to pucker just enough, creating an exhilarating sensory experience. This dynamic duo quickly became my new favorite margarita, offering a unique twist on a classic that is both refreshing and incredibly satisfying. Get ready to celebrate with this exceptional cocktail!

The Margarona: Your Ultimate Beer-rita Recipe
Margarona aka Beer-rita ~ #CincodeMayo #SundaySupper
- 1 cup fresh lime juice
- 1/2 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
- 3/4 cup agave nectar
- 1-11.3 oz. can pineapple nectar
- 1 1/4 cup quality tequila
- 1 6-pack of 7oz. Corona longneck bottles (Coronitas)
- Ice, as needed
- In a large pitcher, combine the fresh lime juice, fresh squeezed orange juice, agave nectar, pineapple nectar, and tequila. Stir thoroughly to ensure all ingredients are well combined. Place the pitcher in the refrigerator and chill for a minimum of 2 hours. This crucial step ensures a potent and undiluted Margarona.
- To prepare one Margarona: Pour 3/4 cup of the thoroughly chilled margarita mixture into a blender. Add a generous handful of ice. Blend until the mixture is smooth and thick, reaching a slushy consistency. If the mixture appears too thin, add a bit more ice. Conversely, if it’s too thick, add a touch more of the margarita mixture until it reaches your desired texture.
- Fill your chosen glass halfway with the freshly blended frozen margarita mixture. Carefully invert a mini Corona bottle into the glass, allowing its neck to settle at the bottom. The Corona will begin to flow out and blend with the frozen margarita. Once the initial flow subsides, top off your glass with additional frozen margarita mixture, if desired. Insert a straw into the glass and serve immediately. Enjoy the unique fusion of flavors and the festive spirit of your homemade Margarona!
