Saturday’s Slice of Life: Buffalo Soldier

Embracing the Wild: A Weekend of Nature, Bees, and Bison Adventures

Happy Saturday, fellow adventurers! As you delve into this post, imagine me deep within the heart of the wilderness, enthusiastically reconnecting with nature after a long, cozy winter spent cocooned under blankets. The crisp air, the rustling leaves, the scent of pine – these are the elements I crave. However, this idyllic scene often comes with a rather persistent companion: bees. And yes, my friends, I’ll most likely be spending a significant portion of my time warding them off.

Has anyone ever truly expressed their profound aversion to bees lately? Honey is a delightful treat, a testament to their hard work, but the constant buzzing in my face, coupled with the implicit threat of a sting, is a game I simply refuse to play. I have a rather strong premonition that I’ll be caught in a comical chase, running in circles away from these relentless buzzers all weekend. Meanwhile, my husband, Squirrel, will observe with a classic blend of embarrassment and a touch of sympathetic amusement. His preferred solution for my acute bee phobia is remarkably simple: “Stand still and ignore them. They won’t bother you if you don’t bother them,” he perpetually proclaims. My invariable rebuttal, usually delivered with a dramatic flourish, is, “Yes, you keep repeating that sage advice, but do you recall that memorable incident when you did absolutely nothing to provoke them, and as a ‘prize’ for your non-interference, they stung you multiple times on the head?”

And, dear readers, that anecdote precisely encapsulates why I rarely heed Squirrel’s counsel when it comes to insect encounters. Clearly, his understanding of bee behavior is, shall we say, less than comprehensive. So, if you happen to spot a woman executing an impromptu interpretive dance of pure panic on a campsite in North East, Maryland, rest assured, that would be me.

In a desperate, albeit ill-conceived, attempt to better cope with my buzzing adversaries, I’ve strategically packed a bit of “liquid courage.” My grand strategy, in theory, works like this: I consume the spirits, instantly transforming into an invincible warrior, ready to conquer all bees with the formidable force of my beer bottle. Okay, let’s be honest, that’s a complete fabrication. The more probable scenario involves me cowering in the deepest corner of the tent, burrowed under my sleeping bag, hoping they simply forget I exist.

Weekend Highlights: Easter Feasts and Majestic Encounters

Beyond the potential for bee-induced theatrics, our past week also brought the joyous occasion of Easter. How was your celebration? Ours unfolded as a wonderfully relaxing day spent at my Aunt’s house, steeped in warmth and good company. I believe we dedicated the entire day to the noble art of feasting. And when one indulges in such culinary delights, one naturally gravitates towards leisurely lounging. That pretty much encapsulates our tranquil Easter Sunday. For the occasion, I contributed a decadent coconut cake, light and fluffy with a rich, tropical sweetness, and my much-anticipated spicy baked beans, a dish that always brings a delightful kick to any gathering.

The Saturday preceding Easter, however, involved a different kind of adventure. I convinced Squirrel to take me back to the local bison farm. My mission? To pay another visit to those magnificent, furry beasts. I know, I know, the prominent sign clearly states “Dangerous,” and I fully grasp that these are powerful, muscular animals. Yet, despite the logical warnings, I find myself utterly reluctant to believe that these incredibly cute fellas are anything less than gentle giants. We paused to snap a few pictures, and to my absolute delight, some of them gracefully sauntered over to the fence, striking a series of surprisingly photogenic poses. One particularly charming bison even gave me a classic, come-hither-over-the-shoulder look that nearly made my heart burst. I immediately declared to my dad that he needed to prepare the backyard for a new, rather large pet, and promptly sent him this picture.

We’re going to affectionately name him Hank, and he will, of course, have his very own iconic theme song: Bob Marley’s “Buffalo Soldier.” Imagine the majestic sight of Hank roaming our yard to that rhythmic reggae beat – truly a vision!

The Humbling Expedition to Mount Stinky Dirt

Speaking of grand adventures, last weekend Squirrel and I embarked on what can only be described as a truly memorable journey to the local dump, all in pursuit of enriching compost for our garden. This expedition culminated in me being “forced”—or perhaps strongly encouraged—to ascend what I’ve affectionately dubbed “Mount Stinky Dirt.” My task involved shoveling heaping piles of steaming, earthy, and distinctly aromatic soil into the back of Squirrel’s truck. The physical exertion was real, the smell was… memorable, and the sheer volume of dirt felt endless. I, being the diligent documentarian that I am, spent a good portion of my time capturing the epic struggle on camera, while Squirrel, bless his heart, bore the brunt of the actual hauling.

After successfully scooping what felt like a small mountain of dirt into the truck, we then transported it home, only to repeat the arduous process of scooping it all back out. Indeed, good times were certainly had by all, especially by my back muscles.

Say What?

Random Musings and Modern Observations

Life, as they say, is full of little observations, and here are a few thoughts that have been buzzing around my mind recently:

  • **The Unbearable Itch of Dirt:** There are few things that drive me quite as bonkers as dirt under my fingernails. It’s a tiny annoyance, perhaps, but the sensation of grit and grime beneath my nails sends shivers down my spine. It’s a constant battle between enjoying outdoor activities and maintaining pristine hands.
  • **The Rise of the Phone Zombies:** Have you, like me, noticed an alarming increase in people walking around completely engrossed in their phones, utterly oblivious to their surroundings? It seems public spaces have become obstacle courses for the attentive. I’m increasingly frustrated by individuals literally running into me because they’re so absorbed in sending a text or scrolling through a feed. What truly grates is the distinct lack of a single apology in most instances. My plea to everyone: put away your phone, or at the very least, pull over to the side of the grocery aisle if you absolutely must send that urgent text. Situational awareness, folks, is key.
  • **The Auditory Assault of Mickey Mouse:** Mickey Mouse’s voice, for me, is akin to a cheese grater directly on my brain. The other day, a parent brought their kids into the office and, for their entertainment, turned on the Disney Channel. I swear, I wanted to bang my head against the nearest wall. How do parents of small children endure that high-pitched squeak all day, every day? My admiration for their patience knows no bounds.
  • **My Unabashed Love for Animation:** Speaking of Disney, I am utterly and completely obsessed with Disney/Pixar and Dreamworks animation. Their storytelling, character development, and breathtaking visuals are simply unparalleled. I’m seriously contemplating making my 30th birthday a full-blown Minion party. How incredibly cool would that be? Imagine a sea of yellow, gibberish-speaking characters! And just for fun, do you want to build a snowman?
  • **The Pedicure Predicament:** Now that spring is officially here and sandals are making their triumphant return, I am acutely aware of my desperate need for a pedicure. The unfortunate reality is that I may have procrastinated a little too long between sessions, and my feet are, to put it mildly, “kind of gross.” I genuinely feel a pang of sympathy for the lucky guy or gal who will have the challenging task of tending to my neglected soles. Poor sap.

Say Cheese!

A Visual Journey: Moments Captured

As we navigate through life’s various experiences, sometimes a picture truly captures the essence of a moment. Here’s a little visual journal from my recent adventures:

All that intense dirt hauling definitely calls for a reward: massive, meat-filled Reuben sandwiches. A well-deserved feast!

Our garden plot, meticulously prepared, is now eagerly awaiting the arrival of fresh veggies. The promise of homegrown produce is always exciting!

Just look at these two characters! How wonderfully pitiful are these two jokers, caught in a moment of candid hilarity?

There’s truly nothing better, or more quintessentially relaxing, than spending a Sunday afternoon engrossed in a thrilling ball game, accompanied by cold beer, a pile of perfectly steamed crabs, and fresh, raw oysters. Pure bliss!

My delightful Easter present from my grandparents: a fantastic new martini shaker. I simply can’t wait to experiment and shake up a brand-new martini recipe!

And finally, a testament to a particularly energetic baking session: this is the direct result of a spectacular cocoa powder blowout. It took me an absolute age to meticulously clean every last speck of cocoa out of all the kitchen crevices. A messy, but ultimately delicious, aftermath!
