Greetings from the historic charm of Charleston, South Carolina! While I’m exploring the cobblestone streets and soaking in the Southern hospitality of Charleston, I’ve invited an exceptionally talented guest baker and a very dear friend to take the reins. It’s my absolute pleasure to welcome Kayle from The Cooking Actress! This isn’t Kayle’s first appearance here on the blog, and for good reason. Her creativity in the kitchen and her infectious personality make her a favorite among my readers – and certainly mine! I often sing her praises, much like the time I shared her incredible Brown Butter Dark Chocolate & Marshmallow Cookies or featured her delightful Chocolate Cookie Dough Balls. It’s safe to say I’m her biggest fan!
Now, without further ado, I’ll hand over the keyboard to Kayle, who has prepared something truly spectacular for you today.
A Special Guest Post: Indulging in Molten Chocolate Hazelnut Bliss
Hey everyone! For those who might not know me, I’m Kayle, the face and baker behind The Cooking Actress. I’m also incredibly fortunate to call Jennie one of my dearest blogging friends. Our bond runs deep, and we’ve both expressed our mutual admiration in various posts on each other’s blogs. We simply adore each other! Now, if only she’d visit me here in New York City! My boyfriend, Michael, often speculates that our connection might stem from our shared affinity for a bit of creative chaos in the kitchen. He might even go so far as to suggest I’m the messier one, which, while slightly cheeky, I can’t entirely deny. A bit of delicious mess is often part of the creative process!
Indeed, some of life’s most exquisite pleasures are wonderfully messy, and the dessert I’m presenting today perfectly embodies this philosophy: the glorious lava cake. The true magic lies in its delightful disarray – that molten center, rich and warm, that gracefully oozes out with every spoonful. It’s the kind of dessert that captures your complete attention, transforming a simple bite into an unforgettable sensory experience. The pure indulgence of it all is simply captivating.
The Allure of Lava Cakes: A Journey into Molten Delight
Lava cakes have held a special place in my heart as an all-time favorite dessert ever since my first encounter in high school. That initial taste of warm, gooey chocolate was all it took – I was instantly hooked, and my love affair with these molten wonders has only grown stronger over the years. On my own blog, I’ve already shared two variations: a delightful flourless version, and my personal favorite, a wonderfully simple yet foolproof recipe passed down from Michael’s stepmom, Jeanne. These recipes have always delivered that perfect balance of crispy edges and a gloriously flowing center.
But today, we’re elevating the classic lava cake to new heights. We’re infusing it with an ingredient beloved by many, an ingredient that promises an extra layer of decadence and flavor: Nutella. Do you have a soft spot for Nutella? Of course you do! It’s a universal favorite, and for very good reason. The rich combination of chocolate and hazelnut creates an unparalleled flavor profile that transforms any dessert into an extraordinary treat. This isn’t just a lava cake; it’s a Nutella lava cake, designed to satisfy the deepest chocolate hazelnut cravings.
Unlocking Deeper Flavors: Homemade vs. Store-Bought Chocolate Hazelnut Spread
While the allure of a classic Nutella lava cake is undeniable, I decided to put a special twist on this particular recipe. Instead of the conventional store-bought Nutella, I opted for a homemade chocolate hazelnut spread. Crafting your own spread offers a unique advantage: it allows for a cleaner, more pronounced hazelnut flavor to shine through, which I absolutely adore! Moreover, when you make it yourself, you have complete control over the ingredients, often resulting in a slightly healthier alternative with fewer processed sugars and oils.
There is a nuanced difference to consider: homemade chocolate hazelnut spread might result in a lava cake that’s less gooey than one made with its store-bought counterpart. The commercial spread often contains specific emulsifiers and fats that contribute to that incredibly molten, almost liquid center. While my homemade version still delivers a wonderfully soft and flowing core, it might have a slightly thicker, more fudgy consistency. However, this is merely a matter of preference. Both approaches yield a genuinely delicious and satisfying dessert. Ultimately, the choice is yours, and regardless of which chocolate hazelnut spread you choose, you’re guaranteed to create a magnificent dessert that will impress and delight. Each bite is a luxurious gift of pure deliciousness!
The Perfect Entertaining Dessert: Make-Ahead Lava Cakes
One of the most appealing aspects of this Nutella lava cake recipe, especially for those who love to entertain, is its incredible flexibility. Once you’ve prepared the batter and poured it into the muffin tin, you don’t have to bake it immediately. Instead, you can simply cover it with plastic wrap and refrigerate it for up to a week! This make-ahead option is a game-changer for dinner parties or special occasions, allowing you to focus on your guests while the dessert is ready to be baked at a moment’s notice. Imagine the delight on your guests’ faces when you serve them their own individual, warm, gooey chocolate hazelnut lava cake, fresh from the oven. It’s an effortlessly elegant and deeply satisfying conclusion to any meal.

Adapted from Savory Sweet Life, this recipe creates luscious Nutella lava cakes with a rich, molten chocolate hazelnut center. Perfect for a decadent dessert!
Ingredients
- 10 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
- 1/3 cup chocolate hazelnut spread (Nutella or other brand, or homemade)
- 1/2 cup all purpose flour
- 1 and 1/4 cups powdered sugar
- 3 eggs
- 3 egg yolks
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ***Optional, for garnish: powdered sugar, more chocolate hazelnut spread (which I used), whipped cream, hazelnuts, strawberries, etc.
Instructions
- Prepare your oven and muffin tin: Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Thoroughly grease a 12-cup muffin tin with non-stick cooking spray, ensuring every cup is well coated to prevent sticking.
- Melt chocolate mixture: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the unsalted butter, semisweet chocolate chips, and the chocolate hazelnut spread. Microwave for 60 seconds. Stir the mixture well, then continue to microwave in 30-second increments, stirring thoroughly after each interval, until the mixture is completely melted and smooth.
- Incorporate dry ingredients: Add the all-purpose flour and powdered sugar to the melted chocolate mixture. Stir until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
- Add eggs and yolks: Introduce the eggs and egg yolks into the chocolate mixture one at a time, mixing well after each addition until fully incorporated.
- Finish with vanilla: Stir in the vanilla extract until it is evenly distributed throughout the batter.
- Bake the cakes: Evenly divide the prepared batter among the greased muffin cups, filling each cup approximately 3/4 full. Bake for 8-10 minutes. The cakes are ready when the edges appear set and firm, but the centers remain deliciously soft and slightly jiggly, indicating that perfect molten core.
- Cool and serve: Allow the lava cakes to cool in the pan for 3 minutes. Gently run a knife around the edges of each cake to loosen them, then carefully invert them onto a cutting board or serving plates. Serve warm and garnish as desired with powdered sugar, an extra drizzle of chocolate hazelnut spread, whipped cream, fresh berries, or toasted hazelnuts for an extra touch of elegance.
- ***Note on make-ahead batter: This recipe is perfect for entertaining! The batter can be prepared up to a week in advance. Once poured into the muffin tins, cover them tightly with plastic wrap and store them in the refrigerator. When you’re ready to bake, remove the muffin tin from the refrigerator as your oven preheats and let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes. The baking time will remain the same.
We hope you enjoy this incredibly rich and satisfying Nutella lava cake recipe. It’s a true celebration of chocolate and hazelnut, promising a moment of pure bliss with every spoonful. Happy baking!
